The restoration of Townsend House and its conversion into a cultural and social centre for Minehead was long and arduous. Starting in 1983 when the Townsend House Trust was formed, the final restoration work was completed in 1992.

The considerable cost has been met by liberal grants from the West Somerset District Council, who own the property, and others, but mainly from the efforts and generosity of the Friends of Townsend House, and local residents.

The house provides several fine rooms for social activities, including exhibitions of all kinds. The acoustics are very good and make chamber music a delight. The gardens are beautiful.

Townsend House

The purpose of these pages is twofold: to bring to the attention of people in the Minehead area the facilities offered by Townsend House, and to tell the history of a house which stands in the middle of our town and of which many people are almost completely unaware!

We hope you find it interesting and look forward to seeing you at Townsend House soon.
